The Vision Behind Hira Nyas Trust

Late Shri M K JAIN
Founder - Hira Nidhi

The founder of Hira Nidhi envisioned a society where the fundamental principle is: “Giving that keeps on giving.”

Inspired by his teachings and principles, we established Hira Nyas Trust in India—an organization dedicated to uplifting underprivileged communities through education and skill development for sustainable employment.

The Birth of Umang Academy

To initiate our welfare activities, Hira Nyas Trust launched Umang Academy as its pilot project—a school designed specifically for children living in slum areas. Recognizing that these children face unique challenges compared to their more privileged peers, we adopted an innovative approach to education.

Before starting, our social coordinators conducted extensive research on students’ family backgrounds and the reasons behind their lack of access to education. Teachers at Umang Academy personally interviewed each child to assess their knowledge and aptitude. Based on their findings, they designed a customized curriculum, focusing on:

  • Skill-based and flexible learning rather than age-based classroom divisions.

  • Eliminating financial barriers by providing free education, books, and stationery.

  • Introducing the ‘No Fees, No Bag, No Uniform’ model, ensuring inclusivity for all.

Overcoming Challenges & Expanding Our Reach

In the first two years, we faced significant challenges in:

  1. Raising awareness among parents about the importance of education.

  2. Instilling a love for learning in children unfamiliar with formal schooling.

Though progress was slow initially, the journey enriched us, teaching us that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

As we entered our third year, our humble efforts bore fruit:

  • Over 300 children from slum areas gained access to education.

  • While most schools operate for 225 sessions a year, Umang Academy conducted over 280 sessions, ensuring continuity of learning.

  • We welcomed children from nomadic families and migrant workers, allowing them to attend classes whenever possible, without restrictions.

  • We provided our space for college student volunteers, enabling evening classes for children engaged in work during the day.

Beyond Education: Creating Leaders from Within

In addition to educating children, we also created employment opportunities for educated youth from slum areas, appointing them as social coordinators. This not only provided them with a livelihood but also empowered them to become role models within their communities.
